Burma is a strongly male dominated society where women have a lower status in the society. At home, however, a husband usually hands his earnings over to the wife who manages the family budget and often runs her own small business too. It is a strongly Buddhist society where traditions, together with a huge reverence for the family, are very important. Burmese men value forgiveness and care for each other within the family.
Burma, officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, commonly shortened to “Myanmar”, is located in Southeast Asia. It borders the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, and is between Bangladesh and Thailand. Burma is a multi-ethnic country with a long history of civil war that causes it to be one of the poorest nations in Southeast Asia. The official language is Burmese and the majority of the population is Buddhist. Burma has a tropical monsoon climate with rainy, hot and humid summers. There is scant rainfall, mild temperatures, and generally lower humidity during winter. Burma is characterized by its central lowlands and several small mountain ranges.
