Family life is very important in Guyanese culture and the extended family plays a major role in their daily lives. They tend to take the time to ensure that all eat together and enjoy the simple act of being in each other’s company. Getting all together for large family reunions is a more common occurrence here than in many Western countries. The Guyanese are very diverse in nearly every way, including ethnicity, language, religion, and behaviors. One half of the population, ethnic Indians, tends to be very conservative in nearly every aspect of their lives, but the rest of the Guyanese seem to be much more liberal in all categories. Common features of these men are friendliness, honesty, a sense of responsibility, and a knowing of how to enjoy the important things in life.
Guyana is the third-smallest country in South America, located on the northern coast of South America. It has an Atlantic Ocean coastline and is one of the few Caribbean countries that is not an island. English is the official language and its two main religions are Christianity and Hinduism. The geography is comprised of mostly Amazonian rainforest with low coastal plains and savannas, leading up to some fairly substantial mountains. The climate is tropical – hot and humid. The name Guyana means "Land of many waters."
