The Republic of Iraq is a country in western Asia. Official languages are Arabic, Kurdish, and Neo-Aramaic and the predominant religion is Islam. Iraq, in an area once home to some of the earliest civilizations, became a battleground for competing forces after the US-led ousting of President Saddam Hussein in 2003. Iraq mainly consists of desert; it has two major rivers, the Euphrates and Tigris, and is home to great mountains in the north, in the Kurdistan autonomous region. Iraq has a small coastline along the Persian Gulf. Climate is mostly desert with mild to cool winters and dry, hot summers.
