Grande Terre is the main island of New Caledonia and is known for its rugged mountains, enchanting waterfalls and for the world's largest coral lagoon. The population is a mix of Kanak, European, Polynesian, and South-East Asian people. The French language is now the most spoken by all, even by those in the most secluded villages.
